Zippers by Specific Length for DIY Specialists and Tailors

Zippers are fastening devices that make a complete closure through interlocking cells or teeth. There are now zippers available for purchase by the yard to suit the specific needs of tailors and DIY specialists.
The length, type and method of application for your chosen zippers depend on the following:
- Garment’s design and style
- Garment’s use and type
- Garment’s construction
- Garment’s care requirements
- Fabric’s weight and type
- Type of opening
- Compatibility with garment and fabric
Regulation Zipper/Neckline or Skirt Zipper/Conventional Zipper
Conventional or regulation chain or coil constructed zipper with a length of 4 to 36 inches close at one end with a bar that spans both tracks of coil or teeth.
Dress Zipper/Closed End Zipper Application
This is a regulation or conventional, synthetic or metal zipper with a length of 2 to 14 inches closed at the two ends by a plastic or metal bar that spans both tracks of coils or teeth.
Industrial Zipper/Decorative Zipper
These are zippers with large plastic or metal tooth as well as a pull tab.
This is a conventional or regulation metal zipper with a length of 11, 9, or 6 inches that closes at one end using a metal bar that spans both teeth tracks. Slider features a special bar support for withstanding frequent laundering. These zippers are made with wide tapes to allow double stitching.
These are zippers made with pull tab at the two sides of the slide. These are available in separating and conventional types.
Dual Opening Zipper/Two Way Zipper
These are separating zippers made with two identical slides, vertical bar strips, and pockets at the bottom and top of the zipper coil or teeth, insertion of bars into their pockets and slides, locks and allows closing the zipper from both or either ends.
Hand-Stitched Zipper Application
This a lapped, concealed or centered fly-front zipper application using a modified prick or back stitch to create event spaced stitch that spans several threads seen on the garment’s surface.
Machine-Stitched Zipper Application
Fly-front, lapped or centered zipper application that uses standard or regular chain stitch or lockstitch machine to create stitches seen on the garment’s face.
Side Seam Zipper Insertion/Dress Placket Zipper Insertion
These are zippers applied in the garment seam closed at the two ends of the opening or placket. Invisible, lapped or centered zipper insertion construction methods might be used.
Trouser Fly Zipper Insertion
These are zipper insertions where on part of the zipper tape has been double stitched to the facing turned back then stitched at 1 ½ inch that forms the folded edge. This produces a lap that conceals the other part of the zipper stitched to the underlay that extends beyond the center front line.
Zipper with Underlay
This is where a strip of ribbon or self-fabric is applied at the back of the zipper chain on the ply nearest the body.
