Ever Heard of Ojas? Here’s What You Need to Know

Old Vedic scriptures speak highly of the concept of energies. They believe that everything that lives has multiple energies and is governed by energy. The principle of Dosha involves energies that reflect on your body and it’s being, along with your mind and soul.
The third dosha is known as the Kapha dosha which is of the water and earth element. This energy depicts the stability and the ability to stay grounded. Ojas in Ayurveda is strong energy which is the most subtle form of the third dosha.
The essence of Ojas plays a direct role in maintaining our bodily energy, strength, immunity, and vitality. If this energy is disturbed or imbalanced, you will notice some disturbances in these aspects.
What is Ojas
Ojas is the energy that radiates as a glow around you. People with balanced Ojas are kind, compassionate, and have good immunity. It represents the combination of the pure essence of the 7 dhatus (vital tissues). It maintains the dhatus, the three main processes of elimination, and the three doshas of the body- Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
With balanced Ojas in the body, all these functions are balanced and allow pure and free flow of energy through all the channels.
What causes an imbalance in Ojas
Some common reasons that cause an imbalance in this energy are:
- Stress and restlessness
- Insomnia or poor sleeping habits
- Physical or emotional trauma
- Selfish and greedy attitude
- Nervousness or fear
- Aggression and violence
- Chronic diseases or pain
- Closed-mindedness or ignorance
How to restore Ojas
There are many natural and external ways to restore the balance in the Ojas.
By meditating, you let go of the constraints in your mind and thoughts. You feel your emotions and let the flow as they are which is what leads to a healthy Ojas. Spending as little as ten to fifteen minutes a day where you focus on just breathing will result in drastic changes.
Change Your Diet-
You need to be aware of what you put into your body because it is what is keeping you upright. Ghee, dried fruits like dates, almonds, cashews, pumpkin or sesame seeds, avocado, and healthy oils of coconut, olive, almond or sesame, and some other foods can liven up your systems and let the energy flow more naturally.
Yoga is a beautiful way to reduce stress, stretch your muscles, and allow air to flow throughout your body. It is a highly energizing activity that works on more than just your physical body. With Yoga, you can bring balance not only to Ojas, but also every other energy you possess.
Herbs and plants–
Remedies for low or imbalance Ojas in Ayurveda extend to many natural options along with practices like breathing, massage, or acupuncture and acupressure. Herbs like Bala, Triphala, Ashwagandha, Shatavari , Vidari, Licorice, Ginger, and a few more promote clear Ojas.
Massages are never a bad idea, especially when you know you can change so much more than sore muscles or a tired body. Using essential oils and herbs, you can pamper yourself to an oil-massage. This releases all the knots and blocks in your body that keep the energy flowing easily.
Ojas in Ayurveda is considered to be one of the vital energies that balance the essence of all others. Keeping a balanced and pure Ojas flow in your body will benefit you in physical, mental, and spiritual manners.
