Varicose Veins happens when the veins underlying the skin look raised and become visible in thighs and calves. These are very similar to spider veins, a condition in which the veins under the skin look like a spider’s web. There can be several causes for varicose veins such as hormonal changes, obesity, physical activity, genetic reasons, etc. These do not pose a severe threat to body or health but can be severely painful.

Varicose veins can be cured with proper exercise and stretching. Exercise can help to improve the blood flow and maintain proper body weight. This can help the patient with varicose veins get relief from the pain and discomfort.

Below are some easy exercises to help get relief from varicose veins pain. On doing it regularly, the patient can also see an improvement in his condition. Although, you should remember that the changes will not be felt or visible overnight. But there will definitely be a significant reduce in the varicose veins and improvement of the condition. Add the below mentioned exercises to your schedule to get relief from pain from varicose veins.

  1. Calf Raises
  • Stand straight
  • Lift your heels and stand on the toes
  • Hold this position for 10 to 15 seconds
  • Get back to the initial position and repeat.
  1. Backward Leg Raises
  • Lie on your stomach with both hands on the forehead.
  • With legs joined together, raise your legs at 30 degrees, make sure to not fold the knees
  • Do this slowly to prevent the muscles from being damaged in the process.
  • Hold in position for 10 seconds
  • Get back to normal position and repeat.
  1. Lateral Raises
  • Lie sideways and keep one hand to support the head and the other hand straight on the floor.
  • Slowly, lift one leg to top and form a 45 degree angle
  • Hold to this position for 10 seconds
  • Get back to normal position and repeat.
  1. Air Cycling
  • Lie on your back. Choose a soft surface to lie on for this position.
  • Lift both of your legs, fold your knees at 60 degree angle
  • Push one leg forward in the air and then pull it back
  • Repeat the same with the other leg and then continue to perform in circular motions as when riding a bicycle.
  1. Side Lunges
  • Stand straight with legs apart at a shoulder length distance and keep your arms on the hips.
  • Lift one leg and place it further while bending the knees.
  • Hold for 10 seconds and then bring back to the starting position
  • Repeat with the other leg
  1. Ankle Rotation
  • Lie down on your back.
  • Lift your left leg up till your chest , with both of your knees folded
  • Hold to this position and rotate your ankles 5 times in the clockwise direction and then 5 times anti-clockwise to the other direction
  • Repeat the same with the other leg
  1. Leg Lifts
  • Lie on the back on a soft surface and keep both legs straight and hands on the sides
  • Lift one leg up and make a perpendicular to the floor
  • Hold on to this position
  • Stay put in the posture for 15 seconds
  • Bring your leg back to the initial position and then repeat with the other leg 


These exercises are easy and need to be done cautiously else there can be a risk of excessive stretching, muscle pull or back problems. In case you face a problem, it is advised to contact a doctor immediately.

Apart from the exercises, the patient must follow a healthy diet plan to clear the varicose veins. Avoid spicy and excessively salty food items. Make sure to include protein rich  food, salad and soup of any flavour. Drink a lot of water as it can be beneficial in clearing the impurities from the body and keep the body hydrated. Lastly, maintain an active and healthy lifestyle to stay fit and maintain a healthy body.
