Kick Start Your Health Journey: Steps for the New Year

It’s officially February, which means it’s more than likely that you will have dropped your “diet” and Dry January goals and got stuck into the Valentine’s Day chocolates. We don’t blame you. Healthcare has its ups and downs like everything else, and you’re allowed to fall off the wagon occasionally, as long as you learn to pick yourself back up. Take a look at our suggestions for small steps to allow you to get back on your healthcare journey.

Check under the hood

January tends to be a busy time for the GP. You probably do this yourself: you’ve got something bothering you, but there are presents to buy, night outs to show up to, family squabbles to break up, and between it all you just suffer. It isn’t that bad, and even if it is, it can probably wait until the Christmas dust settles, hence making an appointment with the doctor in January. Make that appointment with the chiropractor Downers Grove IL that you meant to all winter.

Even if you’ve got nothing to gripe about, you should get a check-up anyway. Ladies, have you missed a cervical screening or a breast exam? You might regret that if it turns out there is something that needs attention hiding behind a scan.

Supplements

We all need a little boost every now and then, and supplements are a great way to make sure you are getting the nutrients you need. We simply don’t eat enough fish to get the fish oil we need, thanks to a ban of tuna in the office, but there’s also Vitamin D to think about in the winter months, magnesium, zinc, and a lot more to think about.

It can actually be a little overwhelming, but if you have something you would like to ease or improve with supplements, like achy joints or energy, you can Google your problem and see what it comes up with. On the other hand, a quality multivitamin can solve a lot of problems at once. But take a look at the ingredients and their quantity to make sure you’re not wasting your money. And don’t overlook the protein shake aisle because the bottle has a big burly guy on it. We all could do with something that turns the exercise you’re doing into stronger muscles.

Steps

We all know that the goal for every day is to get in 10k steps a day. But that can seem pretty overwhelming, not to mention hard to measure. You might want to invest in an affordable smart watch with a step tracker to make sure you’re actually getting in the steps you need. And, say you find out that you’re doing that easily every day, you’ll be surprised how simply seeing it there on your wrist and having a goal to work towards will motivate you. Some of these newer models will even give you a prompt to get you moving throughout the day.

Give yourself a goal

Before you do anything, however, set yourself some goals. They shouldn’t be vague like “lose weight”, because that won’t motivate you, and they shouldn’t be unrealistic like “lose 5 pounds a week” so that you stick to it.
