Why Have 1980s Retro Styles Become so Very Popular?

There is no doubt that fashion trends seem to evolve at a breakneck pace. Every season ushers in a host of new options and if we do not keep up to date, the fact of the matter is that we can soon find ourselves outside of the proverbial loop. Not only is this true for clothing and accessories, but the Internet itself has begun to exhibit this very same behaviour. Before we take a look at a digital example of this observation, it is important to quickly examine the associated psychology and what such movements signify for society as a whole.
A Return to “Simpler” Times
It can be argued that the notion of fashion has existed as far back as when man first donned animal skins to be offered protection from the harsh elements. Of course, this is oversimplifying things a bit. It is nonetheless a fact that we care about how we look, talk, act and, and interact with others. This is why a return to the retro styles of the 1980s is rather interesting.
What might have caused this recent trend? Many would argue that this movement is due largely in part to the buying power and prevalence of those associated with Generation X. A growing number of this influential demographic are becoming nostalgic in regards to the “simpler” lifestyle that is often attributed to the 1980s. Whether this is a fabricated memory or a kernel of truth is present can be debated. Still, the movement is just as valid. This is why we have been witnessing a resurgence of 1908s clothes, music and even countless remakes of films initially made in this era. It only stands to reason that this very same situation can be seen across the digital landscape.
The Cyclical Nature of the Fashion Industry
Many articles have highlighted the surprising popularity of television programs associated with the 1980s. However, we are also witnessing a growing number of gaming-oriented websites adopting this very same trend. Their intention is obviously to appeal to a specific demographic and they have been doing quite well in this respect. Retro-themed backgrounds, bright colours and relevant graphics are all intended to resonate with the end user; particularly those aged between 35 and 45 years.
Still, it is just as important to mention that this is not the first time we have witnessed such a supposed “regression”. Men’s suits of the 1950s have recently made a comeback. The same can be said in regards to female hairstyles common throughout the 1970s. Some of us may even recall when bell-bottom trousers came back into fashion in the early 2000s.
What is the main takeaway point from these observations? First and foremost, fashion is cyclical in nature. What goes around comes around. Secondly, brands and website designers who wish to remain one step ahead of this curve will need to be aware of the latest trends. This is why a growing number are employing marketing specialists, as keeping one’s finger upon the pulse of the fashion industry is no easy task.
